The Swan River RCMP is investigating a single-vehicle crash that resulted in the deaths of five people on Saturday afternoon.

The police said that this occurred on September 30 at around 5 PM, when emergency crews responded to a report of a rollover on Highway 83, about 19 kilometers south of Swan River near the Saskatchewan border.

Officers found an SUV carrying five passengers that had gone into a ditch and rolled over in a field.

Investigators also believe that the vehicle was heading north when it left the road, and that speed was a factor in the crash. The emergency responders were shaken by the severity of the incident.

The deaths of two women aged 42 and 26 and three men aged 37, 36, and 25 were pronounced at the scene, where police said none of the five passengers were wearing seatbelts.

In the same context, the police stated that there have been 89 highway fatalities so far this year in Manitoba, including the Carberry incident.

A forensic collision reconstruction specialist has been brought in to assist with the investigation.
