The electricity supply was cut off across Lebanon today, Saturday, after a shortage in the gas supplies that power the country's electricity plants, according to a statement from the electricity authority published by the National News Agency.

The statement indicated that the blackout resulted from the "forced shutdown" of the "last remaining production unit of the Zahrani plant on the electrical grid entirely... due to the complete depletion of the plant's stock (reserve) of gas oil," according to CNN.

Power supply has been completely halted across all Lebanese territories, including essential facilities in Lebanon (airport, port, water pumps, sewage, prisons, etc.).

The electricity authority in Lebanon stated that it "will once again reactivate the units that were forcibly taken out of service, in accordance with the stock that will be available to it after securing gas oil for its benefit, so that electricity can then gradually be restored to what it was."

In his first comment on the crisis, the director-general of civil aviation at Beirut airport, Fadi Hassan, confirmed that "the airport is currently securing electrical power from generators, and we hope the crisis will not last long," according to the Lebanese newspaper "An-Nahar."

In response to a question about the risk of blackout at the airport in the coming hours, Hassan said: "I do not want to anticipate things, and I do not think the crisis will remain as it is."

Lebanon is facing a severe electricity crisis, as part of the ramifications of the economic crisis the country has been experiencing in recent years, which has led to a shortage in energy supplies.
