Walter Isaacson is preparing to publish a new biography about the famous entrepreneur Elon Musk, in which he reveals unprecedented details about the American billionaire's ability to control the war in Ukraine.
The American website "CNN" نقل some exclusive excerpts quoted from the biography, which is expected to be released on September 12, by "Simon & Schuster".
The man who holds the keys to the war in Ukraine
The book states that Elon Musk secretly ordered his engineers last year to turn off the Starlink satellite communications network, owned by his company, near the shores of Crimea, to thwart a Ukrainian raid on the Russian naval fleet.
He added: "When the Ukrainian drones carrying explosives approached the Russian fleet, they lost connection and drifted ashore without causing any damage".
Musk's decision, which left Ukrainian officials pleading with him to reactivate the satellites, was driven by a great fear that Russia would respond to the Ukrainian attack with nuclear weapons and that the war between the two countries would escalate.
The book explained that these details reveal the unique position Musk found himself in as the war in Ukraine broke out.
It continued: "Whether it was intentional or not, Musk has become a powerful mediator that American officials cannot ignore," especially since he had previously held talks with senior officials.
Russia had disrupted communications systems in Ukraine before launching its special military operation in February 2022. At that time, Musk agreed to provide Ukraine with Starlink satellite stations made by "SpaceX" to stay connected.
However, once Ukraine began using Starlink stations to launch attacks against Russia, Musk began to rethink this decision.
Musk speaks
The owner of the "X" platform (formerly Twitter) stated in his conversation with Isaacson:
The purpose was for people to be able to watch Netflix, relax, communicate online, study remotely, and do good peaceful things, not to carry out strikes with "drones".
Contact with senior officials
The biography reveals that Musk is in contact with senior officials in the White House, Kremlin, and Ukraine.
During this crisis, the American billionaire communicated with U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Mark Milley, and the Russian ambassador to the United States to address concerns about Starlink.
At the same time, Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister, was pleading with Musk, via text messages, to restore communication with the satellite stations.
