The Green Party in British Columbia has dismissed its deputy leader, Dr. Sanjeev Gandhi, due to his liking of a post comparing British Columbia's health official Bonnie Henry to the Nazi war criminal Dr. Josef Mengele.
Dr. Sanjeev Gandhi has resigned from his position as the Green Party candidate in the Vancouver-Renfrew provincial elections for 2024.
Gandhi stated that the post was shared by someone he does not follow on X (Twitter).
Sanjeev Gandhi also wrote in a post: "I am sorry for the harm I caused. I hoped to engage in a meaningful and respectful discussion during the provincial election campaign, but I know people are exploiting this mistake and this attention."
For her part, Green Party leader Sonia Furstenau said that liking the post comparing Henry to Mengele is unacceptable.
Gandhi, former head of thoracic surgery, was an outspoken critic of government policies related to Covid-19 and healthcare, and Gandhi resigned from the hospital on December 31, 2022.
Gandhi was appointed deputy leader of the Green Party in January, and was nominated for the Vancouver-Renfrew district and will face current Health Minister Adrian Dix.
Premier David Eby praised Sonia for making the difficult but necessary decision to fire Gandhi and described his attack on Henry as reprehensible.
The British Columbia Conservative Party held a large rally on Thursday in Victoria, including about 60 people who criticized Bill 36, the Health Professions Act, which was issued last November.
The bill gives the province more authority to regulate healthcare workers in all fields, including requiring them to be vaccinated against Covid-19.
On Wednesday, Bruce Banman, a member of the British Columbia Conservative Party, called for Henry's dismissal.
