The giant internet and technology services company Google has decided to stop the Google Cache service, which is one of its oldest services that saves and archives snapshots of web pages when these pages are no longer available to appear in their original form to users.

The Google Cache service allows users to quickly browse older versions of websites. This service is currently no longer available, according to Danny Sullivan, an official at Google.

Sullivan said in a message on the social media platform X, "The purpose of it (Google Cache) was to help users access old web pages, where it was often unreliable to download any page to keep it. But things have greatly improved. Therefore, we decided to retire the service."

It is worth mentioning that Google provided this service to save a backup copy of any website so that the user can access it when the original site is disconnected or its download is slow. Despite that, an unintended additional benefit appeared in ensuring internet transparency, as it allows users to know if the page was changed or edited after it was first published.

When companies or political campaigns try to delete unwanted information from their sites, users can easily detect this change by searching for the original version of the page stored on the Google Cache service.

The Google Cache link usually appeared in a small menu beside any search result, but this option has now disappeared according to Sullivan.

Among the alternative options to Google Cache in the future could be "Internet Archive" links from the Google search engine, according to Sullivan. The Internet Archive service was launched as a non-profit project, and it also provides extensive archiving for many sites through its Wayback Machine service.
