Glen Murray confirmed that he has entered the race to become the mayor of Winnipeg again.

On Wednesday, Murray officially registered as a municipal candidate after months of rumors that he would seek to regain his old job.

Murray said the decision to run is not one he takes lightly because it negatively affects the family, but he said he ultimately decided to run after talking with community members.

“I love this city, we will get things done quickly,” Murray said. He said he will soon launch his platform with the policies he plans to implement.

“It will be a green city that uses less energy, uses land affordably, and is highly walkable – an electric city in Canada,” adding that he has plans to listen to the younger generations.

“If we don’t listen to people, if we don’t listen to kids aged 15 and 25, and don’t do these things, we are stuck in the past.”

Murray was the first mayor of Winnipeg, serving from 1998 to 2004.

This was not his only political entry. He served as a member of the provincial parliament in Ontario with the Manitoba Liberal Party between 2010 and 2017, including four years as Minister of Environment and Climate Change in the province.

He also ran for the federal Green Party leadership in 2020 but lost to Annamie Paul from Toronto.

Murray is now the eleventh candidate to enter the race to be the next mayor of Winnipeg.

The other candidates are Jenny Motkaluk, Don Woodstock, Christopher Clacio, Rick Shawn, Scott Gillingham, Robert Falcon Ouellette, Sean Loney, Idris Ademiwa Adelakun, Rina Bukhari, and Desmond Thomas. The election day in Winnipeg will be October 26, 2022.
