The German Automobile Association called for intensive education about the increasing danger of accidents due to the planned legalization of cannabis.
A spokeswoman for the association told the German News Agency (dpa), "It is clear that there should be no experimentation regarding road safety." Consuming cannabis can alter perception and have a negative impact on drivers' reactions.
The association warned that people who want to try cannabis after it becomes legal, but have not previously dealt with its effects on the mind, may not fully realize this danger.
The German parliament is expected to vote next week on the coalition's plan for regulated legalization of cannabis use. Starting April 1, adults will be allowed to grow and possess certain amounts for personal use. On July 1, joint cultivation associations for cannabis will be allowed.
