General Motors has recalled 820,000 new small trucks in North America because the rear doors may open unexpectedly.

The recall covers trucks from the 2020 to 2024 model years equipped with power rear doors because water may leak into the exterior rear door switch, causing an electrical short circuit while parking the car.

General Motors also said it is aware of one reported incident involving a minor injury and three complaints regarding minor property damage related to the recall issue.

The recall covers about 570,000 trucks in the United States and 250,000 trucks in Canada, making this the largest General Motors recall in the United States for this year and one of the largest recalls so far in 2024.

U.S. and Canadian regulators said that if the rear door is opened, unsecured cargo may fall from the truck onto the road while moving.

General Motors dealers will replace the external touch panel switch assemblies, and General Motors said the replacement parts use a new material that improves water leak resistance, recommending that owners check the rear door to ensure it is closed before driving.

General Motors said it is working to resolve the issue quickly. The recall covers 2020-2023 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks and 2020-2024 versions of the same small trucks with power rear doors.
