Leaders of the BRICS group stated today, Saturday, the "use of force" in Ukraine to achieve territorial gains, but without explicitly mentioning Russia, according to a statement circulated at the conclusion of the meeting.
The statement said, "Regarding the war in Ukraine under the United Nations Charter, all countries must refrain from threatening or using force to achieve territorial gains against the territorial integrity and political sovereignty of any country."
The leaders affirmed that the use of nuclear weapons or the threat of using them in the Ukraine war is unacceptable.
A well-informed source also stated that delegations from the world's 20 strongest countries reached a consensus on the language used to refer to the war in Ukraine on Saturday.
No details were available yet, but this language could be similar to that used in the statement issued by the summit in Indonesia in 2022, which indicated that while most countries condemned the "Russian invasion," there were also differing views.
Accelerating efforts to combat climate change..
The leaders meeting in New Delhi announced that they would support efforts to triple global renewable energy capacity by the year 2030, committing to accelerate actions to combat climate change. The statement said the group "will follow up and encourage efforts aimed at tripling renewable energy capacity, we commit to accelerating measures to address environmental crises and challenges including climate change."
The G20 leaders, responsible for 80 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions, acknowledged, according to the recommendations of UN climate experts, that the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius "requires rapid, large, and sustained reductions in emissions by 43 percent by 2030 compared to 2019 levels."
At the beginning of the day, the convoys of leaders moved through the cleared streets to a new conference center, costing 300 million dollars, called Bharat Mandapam, located opposite a 16th-century stone fort.
Many businesses, shops, offices, and schools in Delhi, which has a population of 20 million, were closed, and traffic was restricted as part of security measures to ensure the smooth movement for the highest-level meeting hosted by the country.
For his part, a White House official stated that Biden would press during the summit for enhanced climate efforts from major countries, amid increasing concerns about the lack of consensus on reducing emissions.
The G20 constitutes about 80 percent of global emissions, and its views are being closely monitored before the COP28 meeting hosted by the UAE.
Among the leaders participating in the summit are Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
