At least two border crossings in Ontario were closed after a car exploded at the Rainbow Bridge in Niagara Falls on Wednesday.

In a statement issued after 1 p.m., the FBI Buffalo Field Office said today that it is investigating the explosion that occurred on the American side of the border.

The situation is volatile at this time, according to the FBI. No further details were shared. It is unclear whether any injuries have been reported as a result of the car explosion.

Meanwhile, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said on Wednesday that she has directed the New York State Police, along with the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force, to monitor all entry points into the state.

She wrote: "I am traveling to Buffalo to meet with law enforcement and emergency responders and will keep New Yorkers informed as more information becomes available."

Ontario Premier Doug Ford also confirmed that he was briefed on the situation Wednesday afternoon, and that provincial law enforcement authorities are assessing the situation.

In a video statement released today, Kerry Schmidt, spokesperson for the Ontario Provincial Police, said officials also closed the Peace Bridge crossing in Fort Erie and are in the process of closing the Queenston-Lewiston Bridge.

Schmidt said significant delays in the area are expected.
