A dark-skinned worker at Tesla said he was harassed and faced "daily racial slurs" while working at the Fremont factory in California, and he rejected a $15 million award from his company.
Owen Diaz, who worked at Tesla's factory in 2015 and 2016, was awarded $6.9 million for emotional distress and $130 million in punitive damages in the case.
A judge reduced that by about 90% to $15 million, which Diaz rejected, according to a court memo.
Diaz's rejection of the award could mean a new trial in the case. Diaz alleged that employees drew a swastika and left racist drawings and that supervisors failed to stop the abuse, and a Tesla representative was not immediately available to comment on Wednesday night.
