Majid Darwish moved his family from Syria to Canada in 2016, hoping to find a safe place for his autistic and non-verbal son. But he is now considering leaving after his son was shocked during an interaction with Peel Regional Police a week ago.

Darwish said in an interview with CP24.com: "When I came to Canada, I thought the police would protect and help him if he ran from my home, and I never imagined they would do what they did."

The 65-year-old father also referred to an incident that took place just a few buildings from their home in Mississauga last Friday, witnessing Peel Police use a Taser on his 19-year-old son, causing him psychological trauma.

Darwish also did not find anything wrong that day until he heard sirens and cruisers passing by his home, so he went to check on his son, whom he thought was in his room, but Darwish found it empty, so he searched the house out of worry, but he could not find him. When he checked the front door, which was usually locked to prevent Abdullah from going outside, he found it open. Darwish realized something was wrong, went downstairs, and found a police scene 10 houses from their location. He got in his car and checked what was happening.

Darwish stated that what he saw upon arrival was something a father should not see, as his son Abdullah was lying on the ground, his face smeared with blood, and his hands tied behind his back. He recounted: "I felt like I was going to have a heart attack." Darwish added that when he looked at his son, he was asking for help, adding: "I felt he wanted me to at least hug him because he feels comfort when I hug him."

Darwish tried to approach his son, but he said the police officers did not allow him to, and said: "I couldn't because they prevented me from touching him. It was very terrible, and I don't think any father can bear this situation."

Also, Darwish said the police told him that his son had fallen and that his injuries were not serious. He soon learned that his son Abdullah had been shocked when he saw the probes being removed by paramedics from his body. Abdullah was then taken to the hospital and later released to his father. Additionally, Darwish said: "It was a horrific situation," adding that the incident left his son in a state of shock and confusion.

In the same context, CP24 contacted Peel Police about the incident. They confirmed in a statement that they received a call about a suspicious person "in a state of undressing, trying to enter a car and a house." The police said at the time that responding officers did not know the person's identity and circumstances, adding that the officers tried to communicate with the person "who appeared to be in distress," but the person did not respond. The person was arrested and taken to the hospital to receive medical care and support after the use of an conducted energy weapon (or Taser)." They added that the incident is under review.

To understand the reason for the incident, Darwish said he returned to the scene a day later and spoke to neighbors about what they saw. He said the neighbors told him that his son Abdullah was only wearing shorts and was playing on a pile of leaves when the police arrived.
