The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced yesterday, Sunday, following test results, that it is recalling Gerber baby cereal with oat, banana, and mango flavor, manufactured by Nestlé Canada in Canada.
The agency stated: "The affected product is being recalled from the market due to potential contamination with the bacteria - Cronobacter spp. No illnesses related to the consumption of this product have been reported."
It is worth noting that Cronobacter bacteria occur naturally in the environment.
Gerber baby cereal with oat, banana, and mango flavor is being recalled across Canada (CFIA).
The statement from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency said: "They are sometimes found in dry foods, such as powdered infant formula, and herbal teas, and while Cronobacter infections are rare, they can be fatal for infants and may be serious for the elderly and those with weakened immune systems."
The agency is working to ensure the recalled product is removed from the market and that the food safety investigation is ongoing, which may lead to the recall of additional products.
Although contaminated food may not smell spoiled, it can still make you sick, and symptoms in infants under one year old may include fever, poor feeding, excessive crying, low energy, or seizures, and it can also cause urinary tract infections or surgical wound infections in people of all ages. If you suspect that you or a loved one has become ill from consuming a recalled product, contact your healthcare provider immediately.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency urges Canadians not to consume, offer, use, sell, or distribute the recalled products, and if you have the recalled product, dispose of it or return it.
