The city is expected to open an additional warming center this evening Tuesday to accommodate the anticipated increase in usage before nighttime temperatures that could reach -25 degrees Celsius.
The warming center on Cecil Street in Toronto, which only opens when the temperature drops below -15 degrees Celsius, will open its doors at 5 p.m. this Tuesday. The Cecil Street facility will join three centers already accepting attendees at 136 Spadina Road, 75 Elizabeth Street, 12 Holmes Avenue, and 885 Scarborough Golf Club Road.
This additional facility will open ahead of what is expected to be a "very cold" night in Toronto, according to Bill Coulter, a weather expert at CP24. "Not only this afternoon, where you will feel around -14 degrees Celsius, and -15 degrees Celsius at its warmest, but throughout the night."
According to Environment Canada, the temperature in Toronto is expected to reach -16 degrees Celsius, but the cold winds may make it feel like -25 degrees Celsius.
While residents woke up to gusty winds this morning, the city said that no more than two centimeters of accumulation is expected, and in light of the snow, the city advises residents to keep a safe distance from snow removal equipment and to slow down while driving or consider using public transit.
While the morning may have brought chaotic conditions, sunshine is expected to appear in Toronto Tuesday afternoon, as Coulter expects. However, this does not mean the cold will end; temperatures in Toronto are expected to remain below -5 degrees Celsius until the end of the week, with snow expected again around Friday.
