European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said: "EU sanctions will lead to the erosion of the Russian economy."
She explained, in statements made in Brussels, saying "We will freeze Russian assets in the EU and prevent Russian banks from accessing European financial markets; these measures will strongly affect Russia as they will increase capital outflow, increase inflation, and gradually lead to the erosion of Moscow's industrial base."
She added: "We will also weaken Russia's technological position in key areas from high-tech components to advanced software."
