The government of British Columbia said it will provide $2.5 million to the Indigenous Peoples Center in Vancouver after approving a plan to build a large center containing buildings and centers for education.

A press release on Friday says the center will include a campus for post-secondary education and skills training, affordable housing, childcare, cultural services, and support. It states that $2.5 million has been provided to the center to complete the project scope, schedules, and funding sources.

The statement also says that the land for the center "has been secured on terms" from the Local Urban Youth Association, the City of Vancouver, and Suncor Energy Inc., at the corner of East Hastings Street and Commercial Drive in Vancouver.

It says that this center, once completed, will provide Indigenous youth the opportunity to learn in a culturally safe environment. Prime Minister John Horgan also stated that there is "increasing demand for community services related to culture," which can be met through a center like this. "This new center will help meet the need and seize the opportunity to serve as a national example of transformational change led by Indigenous Peoples."
