"Better Food Company" has launched a new initiative to help feed families facing food insecurity in Guelph.
The "Seed-to-Table" project aims to improve the diet by growing produce in the "Hope House Guelph" garden.
"Better Food Company" is a cooperative project between the "Hope House" charity and other local organizations.
Alex Glaros from "Better Food Company" said, "We hope to produce about 15,000 pounds of produce during the summer, then in the fall we will share more than 750 meals across Guelph."
The group has so far planted dozens of sets of red onions, with plans to grow potatoes, carrots, and leeks in the coming weeks.
Jaya James, Executive Director at "Hope House," said that getting healthy food isn’t always easy. "A lot of the food in the system to support families experiencing food insecurity tends to be high in sodium and sugar and not very healthy.
"James said that families facing food insecurity have become more common, with one in seven families experiencing food insecurity.
James added: "Many of these families work, but due to increases in fuel and utilities, they find it harder to earn enough money to feed their families."
The project is looking for volunteers every week to help in the garden from now until the end of summer. "In the fall, we will have people working in the kitchen."
We hope that three people will come to the kitchen daily to help prepare meals that will be shared with the Guelph community.
