More than one hundred people in Sudbury participated in a national march titled "Steps for Life" to raise awareness and prevent occupational accidents.

The funds raised support a national organization that helps families when they lose a family member at work. Bob Quarrel, the spokesperson for his family in the march, stated that his 26-year-old son "Tyler" was killed while moving a granite slab in Sault Ste. Marie in 2012 and added, "All we want is to finish work and return home safely, and this can only be achieved by following safety standards."

The march is a fundraiser for a national organization that works to heal families and put an end to workplace tragedies.

Holly Baril said, "Sometimes, they just need someone to talk to. So, 'Treads of Life' has forums where families can meet, share their experiences, and get that help on how to deal with or cope with this tragic loss they've suffered."

"Workplace Safety North" hosted the event, and officials said workers need to know their rights when it comes to safety. "It is not only important for them to know that it's okay, but under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, a worker has the right to refuse unsafe tasks, and there are provisions to protect the worker if they are forced to work under dangerous conditions."

Mike Barnett, Vice President of Prevention Services at "Workplace Safety North," said to face any obstacles in exercising their rights. The organizers of the march also stated that another main message is prevention, which is everyone's responsibility from top to bottom to make safety everyone’s priority in various fields.
