Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland is next on the witness list in the public inquiry investigating the federal government's decision to invoke the Emergencies Act in response to weeks-long protests last winter.

Freeland, who also serves as the federal Minister of Finance, was responsible for spearheading the emergency economic powers granted to banks and other financial institutions to freeze the accounts of participants in the "Freedom Convoy."

The Public Order Emergency Commission also examined the events that led to the federal emergency declaration on February 14, after weeks of protests that congested downtown Ottawa and halted trade between Canada and the United States at several border crossings.

Freeland is the seventh cabinet minister to testify this week before Prime Minister Justin Trudeau concludes the public sessions on Friday.

Three of Trudeau's senior staff, including Chief of Staff Katie Telford, are expected to take the stand after lawyers finish questioning Freeland.

Also, Commissioner Paul Rouleau is likely to present a final report to Parliament early next year.
