Three Indian citizens accused of murdering Sikh activist Hardip Singh Nagar are scheduled to appear in court today, Tuesday, due to the killing that sparked a major diplomatic row with India.

Karanpreet Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karan Brar were arrested in Edmonton last week and are scheduled to appear before the Surrey Provincial Court at 9:30 AM Pacific Time.

Each of them faces charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Nagar, a proponent of an independent Sikh homeland and head of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, was shot in his pickup truck while leaving the temple parking lot in Surrey, British Columbia, last June.

In September, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau informed the House of Commons that credible intelligence indicated that the Indian government played a role in the murder, a claim denied by the Indian government.

The police, who announced the arrests last week, said investigations into the potential link to the Indian government are ongoing.

Nagar was a key organizer of informal referendums for establishing an independent Sikh state in India, and the Indian government considered him a terrorist.

Meanwhile, India's envoy to Canada is scheduled to speak publicly on Tuesday for the first time since the RCMP arrests in Edmonton.

High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma is set to deliver remarks at the Montreal Council on Foreign Relations regarding current and future relations between India and Canada.
