Two patients died in separate incidents while waiting to see the doctor in the emergency room in the Montreal area.
This occurred at Anna Laberge Hospital, in Chateauguay, Quebec, where emergency department staff said they could no longer keep up with the volume of incoming patients.
A spokesperson for the health authority did not provide details about the deaths, but the hospital administration told Radio Canada that the patients died in the emergency room on November 29 and 30. The administration said it hopes that some ambulances will not go to such a hospital until a specific patient is not received.
Also, as of Tuesday afternoon, a spokesperson for the health authority said that 97 people were receiving treatment in the emergency room at Anna Laberge Hospital, making the emergency room capacity 178%.
Thirty-one patients waited there for more than 24 hours; 13 waited more than 48 hours.
The deaths will now undergo a thorough investigation with the coroner’s office and the local health authority, according to the health authority’s spokesperson.
