One person was killed and four others injured, including Spanish football player Pablo Marí, in a knife attack at a shopping center near Milan, according to media reports, pointing to an isolated act committed by an unstable person.
The Italian news agency (ANSA) reported that a 46-year-old Italian man with mental health issues was arrested moments after the attack that took place in the afternoon in Asago on the outskirts of Milan.
The agency added that the deceased was an employee at the Carrefour store located inside the shopping center where the attack occurred, noting that four people were seriously injured.
Initial investigation elements showed that the attacker, who was undergoing psychological treatment, seized a knife before attacking several people nearby.
Among the injured was Spanish football player Pablo Marí, the central defender for Monza club. A source close to the club said he was taken to the hospital and was still conscious and able to speak.
Club director Adriano Galliani wrote in a tweet, "Dear Pablo, we are all with you and your family, we love you, keep fighting as you always have, you are a fighter and will recover quickly."
