Amazon.com announced the cancellation of 9,000 new jobs, increasing the wave of layoffs sweeping the technology sector, at a time when the unstable economy is forcing companies to downsize.
With this, Amazon will have canceled 27,000 jobs in the past few months, equivalent to 9% of its workforce, which is approximately 300,000 employees, representing a radical shift for a company that has always boasted its ability to provide job opportunities.
The recent cuts focus on the highly profitable cloud computing and advertising departments, which were considered untouchable until economic concerns prompted customers to scrutinize their spending.
The layoffs will also affect the video streaming platform "Twitch," where Dan Clancy, who was appointed CEO of Twitch last week, said the platform will lay off more than 400 employees.
Amazon's decision comes amidst nearly endless waves of layoffs in the American technology sector, during which major companies such as Microsoft and Alphabet, the owner of Google, have let go of huge numbers of employees they had hired.
Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, also announced last week that it will cut 10,000 jobs this year, initiating a second round of sector layoffs after cutting more than 11,000 in 2022.
