The federal government has promised to support the James Smith Cree Nation in Saskatchewan following a deadly mass stabbing incident, but what does that look like?
Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu told Evan Solomon on CTV News's Power Play on Tuesday that the government can cover expenses related to funeral costs, transportation of family members, and mental health services as well. Patty stated: "I have reassured, both officially and unofficially, all the leadership that the government will be there to pay these expenses."
When Solomon asked Hajdu about funding and the timeline for new legislation regarding Indigenous police, the national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls since 2019 was mentioned. Hajdu told Solomon she looks forward to working with Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino to participate in developing this legislation.
Indigenous Services Minister Patty Hajdu also spoke about her support for James Smith Cree First Nation, offering her condolences to all the families of the victims.
