The death of Joodieh Weinstein Haji, the only Canadian citizen still missing amid the conflict between Israel and Hamas and believed to be held in the Gaza Strip, has been confirmed.
Her family says she died on October 7, the day Hamas launched its attack on Israel. She and her Israeli-American husband Gadi Haji were shot near the Gaza border.
Kibbutz Nir Oz, which they were both members of, had earlier confirmed that Gadi Haji was no longer alive earlier this December. Speaking on behalf of the family, news also broke on Thursday about the death of Joodieh Weinstein Haji.
In a statement obtained by CTV News, it was written: "With great sadness, Kibbutz Nir Oz announces the death of Joodi Weinstein.
The kibbutz described her as "an English teacher specialized in teaching children with special needs."
The statement read: "Over the past few years, she also taught mindfulness to children and teenagers who suffered from anxiety caused by the ongoing rocket fire from Gaza." "Joodi was a poet and entrepreneur, and she undertook many initiatives to promote peace in the region."
Weinstein Haji was a mother of four children, two daughters and two sons, and a grandmother of seven. The kibbutz says their bodies are still with Hamas.
