Class action lawsuit against West Jet after flight cancellations

WestJet is facing several class-action lawsuits filed against the company due to flight cancellations related to strike notice.

The plaintiff, Alexandra Fox, submitted a civil claim notice against the aforementioned company to the Supreme Court of British Columbia on August 12.

Anyone who was affected by the cancellation of WestJet flights during the strike notices in June may be part of a class-action lawsuit.

Regarding Evolink Law, the firm representing Fox, the class-action suit alleges that the cancellation of WestJet flights during the strike notices issued by the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) from June 17 to 20, 2024, and June 25 to 28, 2024, was under WestJet's control.

They are seeking uniform compensation for the inconvenience and reimbursement of all direct expenses related to the cancellations or full refunds for those who did not travel, according to a press release on the law firm's website.

WestJet announced on June 19 that it began canceling and consolidating flights as they anticipated a potential strike from aircraft maintenance engineers and other technical operations staff after AMFA issued a strike notice on June 17.

The strike was averted on June 20 after a decision from the Canadian Industrial Relations Board prompted AMFA to withdraw the strike notice. However, it was too late.

WestJet proactively canceled about 31 flights, affecting approximately 6,500 travelers.

Later in the month, on June 26, the airline began canceling more flights proactively after receiving a second strike notice from its mechanics.

Approximately 3,300 travelers were affected by the cancellation of 25 flights that spanned from Thursday, June 27, to Friday, June 28.

It is worth noting that the AMFA strike occurred on June 28, and WestJet was forced to unexpectedly cancel over 150 flights on June 29, affecting 20,000 travelers at the start of the busy Canada Day weekend.
