Canadians living in provinces where the federal carbon tax is imposed received the first climate action incentive payment of this year yesterday.
The federal government said that people living in Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Saskatchewan who have filed their income taxes will receive payments either by checks or directly into their bank accounts.
The Government of Canada stated that payments are calculated based on the number of adults and children in the household.
People living in small and rural areas also received an additional 10 percent on top of the basic rebate amount.
On his part, Environment and Climate Change Minister Steven Guilbeault said in a press statement that the federal pollution pricing system is a key part of Canada’s plan to combat climate change.
The Liberals first proposed this pollution reduction incentive as an election promise in 2008, but they lost to the Conservatives. This carbon pricing system was later revived in the Liberal platform in 2019 and 2021.
Also, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC), an eligible family of four will receive rebates in the following amounts:
Alberta $386
Manitoba $264
New Brunswick $184
Newfoundland and Labrador $328
Nova Scotia $248
Ontario $244
Prince Edward Island $240
Saskatchewan $340
