Canadian international forward Janine Beckie, Olympic gold medalist from Tokyo, suffered a torn ACL in her right knee, which will keep her out of the Women's Football World Cup finals, scheduled in Australia and New Zealand between July 30 and August 20, according to her club Portland Thorns.
Beckie was injured in the first half of the Portland Thorns season preparation match, the defending league champions, against the United States under-23 team, on Wednesday.
The 28-year-old player, who has scored 36 goals in 101 international matches with Canada, said on her Twitter account: "After intensive work to be ready before one of the most important seasons in my career, with Portland Thorns to defend the title, and of course before the World Cup with Canada, it's hard to accept this. I will come back better and stronger as well."
While she will miss part of the league that starts at the end of March, she will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and begin a long recovery journey under the supervision of the Thorns medical team.
Canada, which reached the round of 16 in the last edition, plays in Group B of the upcoming #WorldCup alongside host Australia, Ireland, and Nigeria.
