The Canadian passport ranked seventh in the Henley Passport Index for 2024, which includes 199 passports worldwide.

The Canadian passport advanced one rank from its position in the same index last year.

Canadian passport holders can enter 188 countries visa-free and 38 other countries with a visa.

According to the Henley Index, six countries share the first place in terms of visa-free access to a record number of destinations. These countries are four European Union members - France, Germany, Italy, and Spain – and two Asian countries: Japan and Singapore.

Citizens of these countries can visit 194 countries out of 227 worldwide without a visa.

Over the past five years, the two Asian countries have held the first place in the index that classifies all passports in the world according to the number of destinations holders can access without prior visa.

Dr. Christian Kälin, Chairman of Henley & Partners and founder of the Passport Index concept, says that although the general trend since the index's establishment 19 years ago has moved towards greater travel freedom, the global mobility gap between those at the top and bottom of the index is now wider than ever.

According to him, "As we enter the new year, citizens of the highest-ranked countries are now able to travel to 166 other countries visa-free, an astonishing number, compared to citizens of Afghanistan, which is at the bottom of the ranking with access to only 28 countries without a visa."

South Korea, Finland, and Sweden come in second place where citizens of these countries can travel visa-free to 193 destinations.

Four other European Union countries – Austria, Denmark, Ireland, and the Netherlands – share third place with access to 192 destinations.

European countries largely dominate the top ten, with the United Kingdom rising two places to fourth with visa-free access to 191 destinations compared to 188 last year.

Holders of Australian and New Zealand passports have improved their ranking to sixth place with 189 visa-free destinations, while the United States retains seventh place with access to 188 destinations without prior visa requirements.

It has been a decade since the United Kingdom and the United States held first place on the index in 2014.
