Canadians are complaining about the pressures, amid a significant rise in airfare, especially during inflation, and there are some reasons revealed by airlines.

According to the Civil Aviation Authority, the rise in airfare is linked to increased competition and the rising costs of food and fuel. Recently, Air Canada sparked widespread controversy by adding fees for selecting different seats for travelers who booked at lower prices, but it reversed this action after customer outrage.

In addition to many extra costs, such as those related to baggage and better seats, Canadians often end up paying more.

For some travelers, the costs are so high that they rely on last-minute deals, missing out on opportunities if they can't find anything.

Travelers also face frustration due to long delays and flight cancellations.

Data published last week showed that air travel complaints in Canada reached a record level, with the Canadian Transportation Agency facing a backlog of over 71,000 complaints, having received nearly 43,550 complaints last year alone.

In addition to traveler criticisms, airline executives find themselves under the scrutiny of a Commons committee.

Some airlines, like Lynx Air, have applied for creditor protection and declared bankruptcy.

Air Canada, which reported a loss of $81 million in the first quarter of this year, is among the Canadian companies struggling to balance its financial goals with the need to address the issues facing travelers.

Notably, a spokesperson for Halifax Stanfield International Airport stated that despite the challenges, there are signs of recovery in the tourism industry, with pandemic travel restrictions easing, as this year is expected to see a return to about 85 percent of pre-pandemic activity.

They also added that more activity is expected in the coming months with the return of many airlines and flights.
