Canada will comply with all the rulings issued by the International Court of Justice in the lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel, accusing it of "genocide" against the Palestinian inhabitants of the Gaza Strip in its war against the Hamas movement controlling the sector.

This was explained by officials from the Global Affairs Ministry in Ottawa to the "CBC" network (the English-language service of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) yesterday, after days of confusion following oral and written statements issued on Friday by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly.

Trudeau and Joly's statements were widely misinterpreted in mainstream media and on social media, being explained as a rejection of the lawsuit filed by South Africa and taking Israel's side.

In reality, Trudeau and Joly carefully avoided, in their statements, rejecting South Africa's lawsuit against Israel or supporting it.

The confusion extended to one government minister and some of its MPs, as well as the Consulate General of Israel in Toronto

Pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian organizations agreed that the way the government presented its position reflected mismanagement.

"This goes beyond confusion. I think it is a complete communication failure," said Michael Bueckert from the organization "Canadians for Justice and Peace in the Middle East" (CJPME / CJPMO), which called on Canada to declare its support for South Africa's lawsuit against Israel.

"When we all listened to Trudeau's words, not just us but everyone, from all sides of the discussion, it was completely clear, or seemed clearer than clear to everyone, that this was a rejection of South Africa's demands," added Bueckert.

"It didn't seem neutral. It seemed that Canada had taken a clear position," Bueckert confirmed, repeating that this is what both supporters of South Africa's lawsuit against Israel and supporters of Israel understood.
