Quaker Canada has recalled thirty-eight types of granola bars and Harvest Crunch cereals due to potential exposure to Salmonella.
Salmonella is a type of bacteria. This bacteria enters humans through food. Symptoms of Salmonella infection include abdominal pain, fever, diarrhea, and vomiting.
The company said this step was taken after the mentioned product was recalled by Quaker Oats in America on Thursday.
Quaker Canada also added in a statement: "This action is taken out of caution and commitment to the well-being of our Canadian customers in Canada."
The company said the recalled products are distributed throughout Canada.
Consumers are requested to dispose of any of the products listed here if they are in their kitchens. Quaker Canada warned the public against consuming the recalled products.
The company said it is working with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency to ensure the recalled products are removed from the market.
Children, pregnant women, and the elderly are more at risk
In a separate statement, the Canadian government said that food contaminated with Salmonella does not look bad or smell bad, but it can still make you sick.
The official recall notice also stated that young children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems may be at risk of developing a severe infection that can sometimes be life-threatening.
Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include acute arthritis.
For its part, the American parent company, Quaker Oats, owned by PepsiCo, initially announced the product recall on December 15, 2023. The Food and Drug Administration said on its website that Thursday's recall announcement was an extension of that previous recall.
