In the recall alert published on Sunday, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) stated that 561-gram containers of powdered infant formula bearing UPC codes 0 56796 00498 2 and 0 56796 00498 5 may be contaminated with the pathogen Cronobacter sakazakii.
The recall notice posted on Enfamil's website also indicated that the containers were mainly distributed in July and August 2023.
Although rare, Cronobacter infections in infants can be fatal, with the CFIA stating that the bacteria can cause rare infections in the bloodstream and central nervous system and are associated with sepsis, also known as septicemia, and a severe intestinal infection called necrotizing enterocolitis, especially in newborns.
Contaminated food with Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria may not look or smell spoiled, but it can still cause serious illness. The agency warns against consuming the affected product, which should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase. Anyone who purchased the recalled formula can contact Enfamil at 1-866-534-9986 or via email at consumer.relations@reckitt.com to request a refund.
No illnesses related to the recall have been reported, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency reports.
