Canadian fossil fuel companies have made carbon capture a central part of their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The idea is to reduce the amount of carbon emitted into the atmosphere while continuing to extract oil and gas. But is this realistic?
And should the federal government pay for it?
Carbon capture has become an umbrella term that applies to any technology that traps carbon dioxide and injects it underground. This can mean filtering carbon dioxide from emission sources, such as factories, power plants, or oil sands facilities, through what is known as "carbon capture, utilization, and storage, or removing existing carbon dioxide from the environment."
