The police in the Peel region said they encountered a "disruptive passenger" at the doors of Pearson Airport on Sunday, but they did not arrest or charge him, following an incident on a flight headed to Toronto from London, UK.

In a written statement provided to CP24, Peel Regional Police (PRP) said they were informed that a passenger "attempted to open a door mid-flight," which they noted is "not possible at flight altitude."

The police said the plane landed safely at Pearson International Airport shortly after 3 p.m.

Once the plane was off the Atlantic Ocean, they said officers boarded the plane "to deal with the passenger in question," an elderly man they said was "in a state of crisis and confusion."

The police also said the man's actions did not appear to be intentional.

An airport official said: "He was restrained by Air Canada staff during the flight as part of their aviation safety protocols," adding that no criminal charges were laid and the man and his family received additional support.

Air Canada also confirmed to CP24 that there was an incident mid-flight involving a "disruptive passenger" aboard a Boeing 787-9 traveling from London Heathrow to Toronto on January 21.

Air Canada also noted that it is actually not possible to open airplane doors at high altitudes because they are designed to "function as a plug" using internal and external air pressure "to create a secure seal."
