The United States expressed, on Thursday, its welcome for Canada’s repatriation of 14 women and children from camps in northeastern Syria.

A statement on the official website of the U.S. Department of State said that the United States values Canada’s repatriation today of 14 women and children from displacement camps in northeastern Syria.

The statement added that Washington is grateful to its local partners, and that the United States supported Canada in bringing the women and children home today and is ready to assist other countries in repatriation efforts.

The statement confirmed that addressing humanitarian and security challenges is a priority for the United States and the global coalition to defeat ISIS.

It pointed out that nearly 10,000 individuals from more than 60 countries outside Syria and Iraq remain in the Al-Hol and Roj displacement camps in northeastern Syria.

It emphasized that return to the homeland is the only permanent solution for these populations, most of whom are vulnerable children under 12 years old. Separately, 10,000 ISIS fighters are detained in detention facilities throughout the region. This constitutes the largest single aggregation of detained terrorist fighters in the world and continues to pose a threat to regional and international security.
