Canada announced that the second largest diamond ever extracted from the earth, weighing about 2492 carats, was found in a mine in Botswana by a Canadian company. Lucara Diamond Corp, based in Vancouver, made this significant discovery in a press release, showcasing images of the diamond the size of a fist.
The company has discovered several other massive diamonds in the Karowe mine in Botswana, but this unnamed stone surpasses the rest of the diamonds.
The historical diamond was revealed to the world at a display ceremony in the office of Botswana's President Mokgweetsi Masisi, who was one of the first people to receive it.
This gem weighs about half a kilogram, making it the largest diamond found in over a century.
Regarding this matter, Naseem Lahri, the Managing Director of Lucara in Botswana, stated: “This is history in the making, it's a great pride, it's a product of Botswana.”
While officials expressed that it's too early to evaluate it or determine how it will be sold, another diamond from the same mine was sold for $63 million in 2016. That diamond, called the Constellation, weighed only 813 carats, which is less than a third the size of the diamond that was found.
