Nearly 10,000 people gathered in the city of Munich in southern Germany today, Sunday, under the slogan "Hand in hand for our country" to protest against the German federal government's austerity plans.

The organizers expected the number of demonstrators to reach up to 50,000 people.

The demonstration was called for by a coalition consisting of farmers, craftsmen, restaurant owners, shipping companies, and public service employees, and protesters carried signs with phrases such as "No to the green planned economy" and "This is too much. New elections now."

The organizers had previously invited participants to come to the demonstration site using public transport and to refrain from coming with vehicles such as tractors or trucks; however, 300 vehicles were seen at the demonstration in Theresienwiese Square, according to a police spokeswoman.

It is noted that the ongoing strike at the railway company "Deutsche Bahn" made it difficult for many participants to reach the demonstration site.

Farmers across Germany have been protesting since early January, particularly against the German government's plans to gradually phase out support for agricultural diesel in Germany by 2026.
