The Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) has laid additional charges against a high school football coach previously accused of sexual assault, noting that nine survivors have now filed complaints against him.
In April, the police announced that they had charged Kelsey Albert Dana McKay with 14 offenses, including several counts of sexual assault, sexual interference, and luring a child. The charges were laid after five students, now adults, came forward with allegations to the police.
The alleged assaults took place between 2004 and 2011, while McKay was teaching and coaching at Churchill High School and Vincent Massey Collegiate. A few weeks later, the police said three more complainants came forward, leading to eight additional charges against McKay.
On Monday, the police issued another update, noting that the Sexual Crimes Unit was contacted by another former student reporting exploitation and sexual assault as a teenager by the same high school coach during the early 2000s. WPS said McKay now faces additional charges of sexual assault and luring a child under 18.
The police say he was re-arrested and released under conditions approved by the Crown, and none of the charges against McKay have been proven in court.
Additionally, WPS is creating new presentations for parents, athletes, and sports organizations to educate and prevent sexual assault in sports. McKinnon noted that coaches receive mandatory training and should already know that this type of behavior is inappropriate.
The police said anyone wishing to book a presentation on sexual assault in sports or other topics can visit a link on the WPS website.
