Will the Brampton municipal elections serve as a referendum on the dysfunction that has afflicted the city council?

Todd Letts believes that Brampton may be "Ontario's best asset" for future job growth due to the large available industrial land space that is unmatched in the GTA and a highly educated workforce. This is the main reason why the CEO of the Brampton Board of Trade quickly becomes frustrated when talking about the "job dysfunction" that has swept City Hall in recent months, whether it is the repeated cancellation of meetings due to lack of quorum, corruption allegations involving senior officials, or the particularly public power struggle that occurred after a decision by five council members to proactively and illegally fill a vacant seat. Letts also told CP24.com this week when asked specifically about the municipal elections: "I hope that the mayor after October 24 will be able to bring the council together and focus on creating job opportunities."

Brampton is the fastest growing city in Canada, with its population increasing by more than 10 percent in just the last five years alone. But Letts said the city is largely not living up to its potential due to the internal fighting at City Hall. This internal fighting has escalated since June when Patrick Brown was ousted from the federal race to lead the Conservative Party and a rift appeared between his supporters on the council and a group of four members criticizing his leadership. These councillors eventually issued a series of press releases alleging wrongdoing, and at one point requested the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and the province to investigate Brown's financial dealings inside City Hall, which he confirmed he did not commit any wrongdoing.

The upcoming Brampton mayoral race is shaping up to be one of the most controversial competitions in the GTA, with the whistleblower on corruption and mismanagement against senior staff expected to be a key challenger to Brown for the position.
