For followers of Romana Didulo, the Queen of Canada does not live in a British palace - she is in the rural village of Richmond in Saskatchewan.
Surrounded by farmland about 450 kilometers west of Regina near the Alberta border, Richmond has a population of just over 100 people and since September 2023, it has also been home to Didulo and a group of her followers, leading to protests and heated confrontations with locals.
Didulo is a prominent figure in the QAnon conspiracy movement and has promoted the killing of police and politicians.
The residents of Richmond began protesting Didulo’s presence in October, prompting more of her followers and some of their children to head to the former fenced school, where they declared a sovereignty oath for their queen.
One Richmond resident told that her father stopped paying his bills because of Didulo.
Sarteschi from Chatham University said, “I’ve seen court records where people there stopped paying mortgage installments because they believed her ideas and truly thought they did not have to pay their taxes and mortgage, then they literally ended up on the streets or living in their cars.”
Didulo’s group is also alleged to have sent threatening messages to Richmond residents and officials like Mayor Brad Miller, who fears that Didulo or her supporters might run for city council.
Miller said: We keep the curtains closed now and our doors always locked and well-checked; someone needs to help us, we have run out of ideas.”
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) met with locals in October 2023, and the police said that while monitoring the group and investigating alleged murder threats, they cannot lay charges or remove people from private property unless there is harassment or an imminent threat.
