Minister of Diversity Ahmed Hussein said the government cut funding for an anti-racism project due to "vile and despicable" tweets by a senior advisor involved in the strategy.

Hussein says the project run by the Community Media Advocacy Center - which received $133,000 from the Canadian Ministry of Culture and Heritage - has been suspended.

This step comes following reports from the Canadian Press agency about tweets sent by Laith Maarouf, a senior advisor on the Canadian Broadcasting anti-racism strategy project.

Hussein described the tweets as "anti-Semitic" and demanded that the center explain how they employed Maarouf and how they plan to rectify the situation.

Maarouf's lawyer differentiated between his client's tweets about people he calls "white Jewish extremists" and Jews in general, stating that Maarouf does not harbor hostility towards the Jewish religion as a collective group.

The center's project received funding from the Ministry of Culture and Heritage’s anti-racism action program, and the Minister of Diversity was quoted alongside Maarouf in a press release about its launch last year.

One of Maarouf's tweets said: "You know all the loud-mouthed human shit bags, also known as white Jewish extremists."

Adding, "When we liberate Palestine, they must return to where they came from, they will go back to being low-key whores of their superior white Christian/secular masters."
