National Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh urged Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to intervene to see Canada Post cancel the extra fuel charges on deliveries during the upcoming holiday peak period.
To help cover rising costs, Canada Post announced in September that it would adjust long-term additional fuel charges on shipping prices on a weekly basis, depending on the diesel price.
Also, as of November 28, Canada Post currently imposed an additional fee of 39.5 percent for home services, after diesel reached $2.30 per liter earlier this month.
Singh told reporters on Tuesday that the Prime Minister should consider the rising cost of living for Canadians, and wondered whether the federal government had approved Canada Post's decision to impose an additional charge approaching 40 percent.
Singh also described the surcharge as "manipulation," while he seemed to suggest the federal government direct the Crown corporation to cancel the policy during the busy holiday season.
Similarly, Canada Post spokesperson Valerie Chartrand wrote in an email to CTVNews.ca that the additional fuel cost is based on the average diesel price across Canada as measured by an independent company, and Canada Post "understands the impact on customers."
Public Services and Procurement Minister Helena Jaczek addressed the policy during question period on Tuesday, saying: "The Canadian postal institution operates at arm's length from the government. But we have regular conversations with Canada Post regarding their initiatives, and we monitor it closely. I am in contact with this forum, and I am committed ... to help continue this kind of conversation."
