Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is scheduled to meet with his NATO counterparts today, Wednesday, before a dinner at the White House, where U.S. President is expected to host the alliance's leaders.

Concerns about Joe Biden's health and the possibility of Donald Trump taking a second presidential term have overshadowed the three-day leaders' summit in Washington, D.C.

The age of the current president, at 81, and his mental fitness have come under international scrutiny since his disastrous debate performance on June 27 against Trump.

Biden delivered a clear and strong speech at the celebration of NATO's 75th anniversary on Tuesday evening, at a crucial time for the Democratic leader and the stability of his party. In front of the watching world, it was an important moment for Biden to prove he is capable of taking responsibility.

But the demands of the summit have only just begun. Biden's team said the president is sharper earlier in the day and tries to avoid events after 8 p.m., which is when dinner with NATO leaders begins on Wednesday.

Trudeau did not answer a question from reporters on Tuesday about whether he has concerns regarding the president's health.

The prime minister is facing his own pressures during the summit, as the ongoing battle in Ukraine with Russia is a focal point of attention.

In the lead-up to the summit, American politicians have openly noted that Canada is significantly behind in its financial commitments to NATO.

NATO allies have agreed to spend at least 2% of their GDP on defense. Current spending in Canada is just below 1.4 percent.

Trudeau attempted to preempt criticism during a speech on Tuesday where he stated that Canada is following through on its promises to increase that funding. This is an issue that is likely to follow Trudeau during his meetings with international counterparts as the summit gets underway in earnest on Wednesday.

Trudeau is scheduled to meet with new Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof, as well as South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. He is also expected to participate in a meeting with the leaders of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Sweden, and Norway.

The 32 NATO allies are set to gather for a North Atlantic Council meeting following a welcoming ceremony on Wednesday afternoon.
