Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), which analyzes higher education institutions, has released its annual report that includes global university rankings by subject, revealing the best universities in 54 academic disciplines.
The ranking is based on an analysis of more than 15,700 university programs followed by students at 1,594 universities worldwide in 93 countries and territories.
Five general fields of study were also included in this ranking: Arts and Humanities, Engineering and Technology, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences and Management.
Rankings for specific subjects can be found such as Literature and History within Arts and Humanities, Computer Science within Engineering and Technology, Nursing and Psychology within Life Sciences and Medicine, Chemistry and Mathematics within Natural Sciences, and Marketing within Social Sciences and Management.
All rankings are based on academic reputation, university management reputation, research citations, the “H” index (a method for measuring productivity and impact), and international research networks.
QS revealed that the University of Toronto has the largest number of high-ranking disciplines among Canadian universities (48 rankings). It ranked fifteenth in both Arts and Humanities and Life Sciences and Medicine.
The University of British Columbia ranked 23rd and McGill University ranked 36th in Arts and Humanities, along with 22nd and 23rd respectively in Life Sciences and Medicine.
As for the subjects of Engineering and Technology, the University of Toronto ranked 27th, while the University of British Columbia came in 33rd, and the University of Waterloo in 37th.
Meanwhile, the University of British Columbia ranked 17th for Natural Sciences, while the University of Toronto ranked 23rd, and McGill University ranked 41st.
Also according to QS, the United States has the largest number of high-ranking disciplines globally (256 disciplines), followed by the United Kingdom with 145 disciplines.
