The United Nations warned on Tuesday that millions in Sudan are suffering from food shortages, and some are dying due to the lack of healthcare after four months of war that has devastated the capital, Khartoum, and led to ethnically motivated attacks in Darfur.
UN agencies said in a joint statement, "Time is running out for farmers to plant the crops that will feed them and their neighbors. Medical supplies are scarce. The situation is spiraling out of control."
Elizabeth Throssel, spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said in a briefing in Geneva, "Many of the dead have not had their remains collected, identified, or buried."
Leila Bakr, a representative of the UN Population Fund, stated that reports of sexual violence have increased by 50 percent.
UN estimates indicate that the seasonal rains, which increase the risk of waterborne diseases, have destroyed or damaged homes of up to 13,500 people.
