Prime Minister Justin Trudeau hints that the planned energy agreement between Canada and Germany will focus more on Canada’s goal of being a long-term supplier of clean energy to the world.
Trudeau is set to sign an energy development agreement largely focused on hydrogen with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during Scholz’s visit to Canada next week.
Trudeau says the Russian invasion of Ukraine has "changed everything" for global energy security.
Europe, and Germany in particular, rely heavily on Russian oil and gas and are urgently seeking short- and long-term alternatives.
Trudeau says Canada has increased its production of oil and gas, but realistically cannot do much to change the short-term energy crisis.
But in the long term, he says, Canada’s hydrogen and critical minerals strategies aim to make the country one of the world’s largest energy suppliers.
