The spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, Matt Miller, confirmed during a press conference that "the United States is engaged in discussions with Israel, the United Nations, and Egypt regarding the establishment of safe zones within Gaza where innocent civilians can be safe from harm."

He added, "This is one of the main objectives of David Satterfield, the newly appointed U.S. Ambassador for humanitarian issues in the Middle East, in addition to securing the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza from Egypt."

Miller pointed out that "such safe zones are of utmost importance, as the United States recognizes that regional leaders strongly oppose the evacuation of Palestinians from Gaza."

The State Department spokesperson stated that the United States is still working to secure the evacuation of American citizens who wish to leave Gaza, but has no updates on these efforts.

In a related context, the United Nations confirmed that it will inspect aid entering Gaza as part of the Israeli-Egyptian agreement
and the UN flag will be raised at the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza for protection against Israeli airstrikes under an agreement mediated by the UN between Israel and Egypt to allow aid into Palestinian territories.

A Egyptian official and a European diplomat stated that UN monitors will also inspect trucks loaded with aid before they cross into Gaza.

They say that the UN will oversee the aid, along with the Egyptian and Palestinian Red Crescent societies, to ensure it is delivered to civilians and not used by Palestinian terrorists.

The Egyptian official stated that they are still negotiating with Israel regarding allowing fuel into Gaza, as the shortage has led to the closure of many hospitals.

The United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has called for "humanitarian aid to reach Gaza quickly and without obstacles."

He said, "We need food, water, medicine, and fuel now," adding during his visit to Egypt today, amid increasing calls for aid to reach the region's 2.4 million residents: "We need it on a large scale and we need its sustainability; it is not a small operation that is required."

He continued, "In clear terms, this means that humanitarian workers need to be able to bring in aid and must be able to distribute it safely."
