US State Department spokesperson "Margaret McLeod" confirmed that the United States has relationships with both India and Canada, and that the two countries are important partners for the United States.

The spokesperson said - in comments made regarding the increasing tensions currently between India and Canada - "The allegations made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau raise serious concerns, and we are in contact with our Canadian allies, urging the Indian government to cooperate in the ongoing investigation regarding this matter."

The spokesperson added, "The United States has relations with Canada, and it also has relations with India, both of which are important partners for us, but the most important thing is that the guilty must be brought to justice."

It is worth noting that the spokesperson for the National Security Council at the White House, Adrienne Watson, had earlier today rejected reports that the United States reprimanded Canada after it accused the Indian government of being behind the assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Watson stated that there is coordination and consultation with Canada, and there is also communication with the Indian government.

Watson was responding to reports in American media indicating that Washington distanced itself from Canada's allegations of New Delhi's involvement in Nijjar's killing.

For his part, US National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby described Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau's allegations against India regarding Nijjar's killing as "serious allegations," and said - during an interview with CBS News - that the United States wants to address this matter in a transparent manner.

Kirby urged India to cooperate in the ongoing investigation regarding this issue, stating, "These allegations are serious, and we know that Canadians are conducting an investigation, and we do not want to pre-empt the results of this investigation, but we urge India to cooperate in that investigation as well."

It is important to note that the spokesperson for the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi, had previously mentioned that Canada's allegations regarding India are "politically motivated."
