There is a new apple in town, and it comes directly from an orchard in Ontario.

We present to you Snowflake, an apple with white spots and a pinkish-red skin. One of the orchard’s founders says it has a complex but distinctive flavor: crisp, juicy, with initial sharpness quickly undermined by a sweet, refreshing aroma.

The new apple variety arrived in the produce aisle at selected Loblaws and Walmart stores in the province in October, although it took about two decades to get there.

However, according to Kirk Kemp, this won’t take long given the years it takes to consistently grow apples and negotiate a licensing agreement, as well as the cooler, more inhibitive conditions in southern Ontario.

Kemp, one of the founders of Algoma Orchards in Newcastle, Ontario, said that it started when he visited the Summerland Research and Development Center of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada in British Columbia looking for some new varieties.

“They let me down into their research storage unit, where they had about 100 different types there. Kemp told CTV News Toronto, “They were just numbered varieties, so they weren’t close to commercial marketing, and I found five apples... I thought they looked beautiful and tasted good.”

Kemp added that Algoma Orchards planted five trees when they returned to start. When the apples began to grow, Kemp said they noticed something unique about it.

“The apple has what they call lenses, and if you look closely, next time you look at an apple, you will find lots of small light dots on it. Kemp explained, “It’s almost like the follicles of your hair on your skin.” “And these lenses were distinctly white.”

This is how this apple got its name. Kemp said one of the field workers made the comparison that it looks “like a snowflake.”

Kemp said, starting from five trees to now 50,000 in the ground, there are currently only enough for sale in Ontario, but they hope to be able to sell from coast to coast in the country within a few years.

And there may be more unique varieties to come out of Algoma Orchards in the coming years.

Kemp said, “We are working on two others right now.” “We’re still in infancy, but we have two or three others on the way.”
